10 Beginner-Friendly Tips for Catching Bass

Tip #1 Water Conditions:

The next time you’re out fishing make sure to have a look at the water and determine what conditions you’re dealing with. Is the water clear, muddy or just normal? If the water is clear, you can try using a spinner bait. For muddy water, lures that vibrate tend to work better.

The fish won’t be able to see as well but if they feel the vibrations and hear the lure going past you’ll have a better chance of catching some bass. If your rod shakes as you reel it in, then you know you are using a bait that vibrates. For normal water conditions almost any bass lure will do.

Tip #2 Weather:

Always consider the weather forecast when you’re going out fishing not only to catch more fish but also for your safety. If there’s any possibility of a thunderstorm you should postpone your trip for another day.

On bright, sunny days bass will generally seek cover so look for a shady spot to cast to. Rainy days are perfect days to go fishing. Bass tend to be feeding during a rain shower because the insects are out and about. If a cold front is approaching, that’s also another great time to go out and try to catch some bass.

Tip #3 Bring Everything:

Take all your gear with you when you head out fishing for the day. You may need to change your tactics several times and it’s good to have all your lures with you.

Tip #4 Be Patient:

Don’t be discouraged if you haven’t caught anything in the first hour or two. You may need to change your lure or change your location.

Tip #5 Carry Your Cell Phone:

If you don’t want to be disturbed while fishing, put your cell phone on silent or turn it off but it’s important to have it with you in case anything should go wrong.

Tip #6 Best Time of Day to Fish:

I find that dawn and dusk are the best times to catch bass.

Tip #7 Fishing Line:

For bass fishing you shouldn’t need really heavy line. The lighter the fishing line, the better. If you are using a heavy line you might scare away the fish because heavier line means thicker, more visible line.

Tip #8 Live bait:

I love using live bait. It doesn’t have to be anything special. I find that garden worms work really well.

Tip #9 Choosing a Lure:

The best lures for bass fishing are crankbaits, spinner baits, and plastic worms.

Tip #10 Location, Location:

When you’re trying to choose a spot to set up camp for the next few hours have a good look around before you choose your location. Don’t just pick the closest area to you.

If you’re river fishing, look out for a large rock that might be blocking the current. This could be a good spot for bass to feed.

For river or lake fishing tree covered areas can also be good locations to catch bass. If your first location doesn’t work, try somewhere else. Don’t be afraid to change tactics or bait.

Fishing is a unique sport because it’s both relaxing and exciting.  There’s nothing like sitting , enjoying nature and the sound of the water hitting up against your boat, and then getting that sudden jerk on your fishing rod.

Fishing can be enjoyed by anyone but there’s some safety precautions that you should be aware of if you plan to go fishing.

Random Informative Fishing Tip: Safety Pointers When Going Fishing

Learn How to Swim

I know that you can wear a life vest, but the best way to keep yourself safe is to wear a life vest and know how to swim.  No matter what kind of fishing you do it’s a good idea to learn how to swim.

But if you ever find yourself in difficulty in a river, your best bet is to stay calm and keep your head above water.  The easiest way to do both those things is to float on your back.

Don’t panic and try to swim against the current towards your boat or your friends.  Also, don’t be tempted to remove your clothing.

Your clothes will be holding pockets of air that will help keep you afloat.  Remain calm and try to stay floating on your back.

Take Care When Wading

You should always wear a lifejacket when you are wading.  It is also advisable to carry a wading staff.  Not only will it help you in strong currents but you’ll also be able to check what’s lying ahead.

Use your stick to check the river bed and make sure it’s safe.

Boat Safety

No matter how trustworthy your boat is you should always bring oars and check that you have enough fuel.  Remember to fish sitting down and not to make any sudden movements.

Check the Weather Forecast

Before you head out fishing it’s important to check the forecast.  It doesn’t matter what kind of fishing you plan on doing.

Most modern fishing rods are made of carbon fiber which will conduct electricity.  If there is any possibility of a storm, you should postpone your trip.

Sun Protection

If you’re out fishing on a nice, sunny day you should apply plenty of sun cream and wear a hat.  It’s easy to get dehydrated after spending a few hours outside in the heat so don’t forget to bring a water bottle and try to find some shade.

Hook Safety

It’s important to be conscious of those around you when you are fishing.  Always check if there is anyone behind or next to you.  Hooks can do some painful damage (I speak from experience).

Fishing is a fun and exciting sport that can be enjoyed by just about everyone.  Make sure to keep these fishing safety pointers in mind on your next trip.
