Rod Holders for Baitcast Fishing

What are the essentials to have with you on your fishing outing? I'm sure that a cooler or portable ice chest will be on almost anyone's list. Here's what I use, and it is plain to see in the picture that this cooler has seen much duty as its color has faded and the upper area is stained.

look at my rod holders

Mounted on top of the cover, which may be unlatched and removed from either side, is a small, simple, soft foam boogie board which is set with double-sided adhesive tape, and makes sitting on it quite comfortable.

This eliminates the need for a portable chair which may be easily blown into the ocean with a strong wind. Stored inside are solid blocks of ice, bait and fish during a fishing outing. What makes this cooler versatile are the two rod holders attached near the upper area.

My rod rest in a stand-by position parallel to the surface and facing the ocean. While there are a few folks who use the elevated surf type rod holders, they do present an obstacle at times when there are many people casting nearby. Accidental, and at times heavy contact from another rod can cause needless damage and heartburn.

That is why you will rarely see elevated rod holders if you happen to visit the seawall at Shizuura Port, in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The type of rod holder I use may be difficult to find in your area, but even if you have to improvise and make something similar on your own, it will be worth the effort.

Of course, if you are fishing from an islet, or on a rough and rocky surface, another type of rod holder is quite useful. The one pictured below has a long spike going through the holder to be anchored into the rocky surface, allowing the rod to rest parallel and facing the ocean.

my other type of rod holder

This is another type of rod holder which rests the rod parallel to the surface and not elevate it. It was quite popular when first introduced. The square area on the left of the holder is actually a weight to keep it anchored and safe from strong winds.

my third fishing rod holder

It weighs under 15 pounds. Without a rod resting on it strong winds are not a problem. However, with a rod on the holder strong cross-wind gusts easily shift the rod position.

In extreme cases the rod will rotate. If you see one on sale and are thinking of purchasing it, I hope that it is at least 25 pounds in weight. That's a heavy load of fishing gear to carry, but strong gusts may hit you suddenly.

Your rod and reel are major items that you never want to see blown away. Still, I like the design of this rod holder and haven't had the heart to discard it, yet.

Random Informative Fishing Tip #1: Get Your Next Bass with Megabass Fishing Lures

If you want to catch the megabass, you need the right combination of megabass fishing lures. It can be a complicated issue but if you approach it the right way it's actually a very open and shut case.

If you want to catch the big fish, you need to give them the big meal. Which is not necessarily true, but if you are going after the big ones, you need to fish with something that that won't waste your time bringing in the small ones.

a really awesome megabass lure

Now I am also not saying you can't try some smaller lures here and there, it's just up to you on how much you want try catching a big bass on a little lure. Now to the lures.

Top water lures, buzz baits and weed less baits such as mouse's and plastics. They work really well. I have caught my two biggest bass on a top water mouse, while it doesn't sound like a tasty meal, but trust me it works.

Another type of Megabass fishing lure is the spinner bait and crank bait, don't think that big bass can't swim fast, because they can scoot. These lures are nice because they cover ground quickly and you can catch the active fish and move on.

And don't forget a trusty Simms fishing vests to give you quick access to all of your fishing lures and supplies!

Finally, the last group of lures that I would classify as a megabass fishing lure would be the trusty worm. Throw that worm in and let it sink to the bottom and give it a light bounce off the bottom, if it runs by that big old bass on the bottom, he more times than not will not resist it. This is the bait to use in when all others lures do not work. It's the go to in the crunch time lure for sure.
